PAINTINGS BY JAPANESE ZEN MASTERS
17TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT

ORIGINAL WORKS OF ART

ZOHO BUNGA (17791840)

Zoho was a very intense and focused Zen master. Like his nature, his brushwork is strong and powerful.

Zoho's primary Zen teacher was Gyo Gensetsu (1756–1831), a direct disciple of Hakuin. Under Gyo's tutelage, Zoho attained enlightenment at the age of twenty-three, but Gyo was not ready to confirm him at that time. Zoho continued to practice with Gyo for another ten years, often becoming so involved in his practice that he would not eat or sleep for days on end. Eventually, Zoho became Gyo's dharma heir.

Among Zoho's favorite artistic subjects were Daruma and Shoki, the demon queller.

Out of respect for Zoho, the emperor of Japan gave him the posthumous name "Shingan Dokusho Zenji".
